On 20th of November a brand new and much needed defibrillator was delivered to Kobanê for use in the local hospital.
The donation came from the Danish NGO Global Medical Aid (GMA) which specialises in providing medical equipment and supplies to developing countries. The delivery of the much needed brand new defibrillator was largely organised with the support and aid of Dr. Zeynep Binici Cetinkaya, a cardiologist at The Heart Centre, Department of Cardiology, Rigshospitalet.
Denmark has one of the best healthcare systems in the world and as a result Danish hospitals discard functional equipment worth millions of Danish kroners each year. GMA attempts to provide the functioning machines to developing countries instead. In this case the defibrillator was a brand new machine worth close to 30,000 Euros.
To date, GMA has donated to Afghanistan, Albania, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Nepal and Sri Lanka in collaboration with the concerned ministries of health or international organizations.
The recent health report published by the Kobanê Reconstruction Board noted an urgent list of necessary medical equipment and supplies. The reported noted the lack of international aid and support in relation to cardiology medicine and equipment.
The donation of the defibrillator will no doubt go a long way in ensuring that the health sector is able to provide more comprehensive health care to the community. Nevertheless, there are still serious needs within the health sector that require further aid, donations and support from NGOs.
